Ready Or Not is yet another great, mind-blowing Wookiefoot album from start to finish! I just love how Wookiefoot sounds completely unique by combining a lot of different genres into each album. There are 13 tracks on Ready Or Not that mix many different styles like reggae, rock, folk, bluegrass, funk, hip hop, soul, ska, jam band, acoustic, roots, jazz, electronic, dubstep, and even hints of traditional Irish music with bagpipes. The lyrics are also really awesome and insightful, as always!
Wookiefoot‘s annual 3 day Shangri-La festival starts today (September 6th) at Harmony Park on the shore of Lake Geneva near Clarks Grove, Minnesota. There are tons of other great bands playing besides Wookiefoot, including Easy Star All Stars, Trevor Hall, Medicine For The People, Cas Haley, Jon Wayne And The Pain, New Reb, Useful Jenkins, Lunar Funk Theory, Aaron Kamm And The One Drops, T.U.G.G., Blue Martian Tribe, More Than Lights, Kinetix, Steez, Heatbox, Pert Near Sandstone, Zach Deputy, The Luminaries, Elephant Revival, Delhi 2 Dublin, Papadosio, and more! A few days ago Common Kings released the official music video for their single “Wade In Your Water“. The “Wade In Your Water” single was released earlier this year on February 9th. It’s a really sweet love song with some groovy bass, nice acoustic guitars, reggae skank keys in the chorus, and great lyrics & vocals as is always the case with Common Kings.
Check out the previous post for Common Kings and the video for the acoustic version of their single “Alcoholic“.

The New International Sound Of Hedonism is the brand new album by the Amsterdam based reggae/rock/ska/punk band Jaya The Cat. This is a killer album that you can pre-order today from Bomber Music and it will ship internationally today so you will receive the album before the official release date! This offer is only good for today (July 24th), so order away! Of course you can still order after today, you will just receive the album later (July 30th – August 3rd).
Here is Jaya The Cat‘s full bio from their website:
Jaya The Cat spent the better part of 2011/2012 writing and recording in hotel rooms and backstages across Europe, to release a record that’s quite arguably their best effort to date. Staying true to their sound, Jaya The Cat play an original blend of reggae, ska and punk rock –dosed with dub and dance hall beats, all blending into a musical soundtrack to support tales filled with drunken sunrises, narrow escapes, dysfunctional love affairs, political disillusionment and optimistically raised glasses, through seedy bars, carnival parades and late night dives.
With instant classics like “Here Come The Drums”, “Unconditional Love” and “Fake Carreras” giving hardcore Jaya The Cat fans the energy and catchy hooks they’ve come to expect, tracks like “Bos en Lommerweg” and “Thank You” show a more mature and almost pop approach. For “Put A Boombox On My Grave”, Jaya The Cat enlisted the talents of Jonny “Itch” Fox from the now disbanded UK band The King Blues to lay down guest vocals. The calypso-reggae influenced track “Late Night Sonic Insurrection” features upcoming Ska-Reggae Soul talent Adam Parsons of Captain Accident and The Disasters. Horn sections were performed by members of Dutch Jazz band The New Cool Collective.
Originating from Boston and currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Jaya The Cat not only continue to grow sonically but have also been hard at work building their reputation as one of the premiere bands on the European live circuit, playing hundreds of concerts to an ever expanding audience and turning every one into an unforgettable onstage party with the audience singing, dancing and drinking right along with the band. Although they prefer to play their own headlining shows, Jaya The Cat have shared stages with a number of their peers such as Sublime, Beatsteaks and Less Than Jake – and have also had the pleasure of appearing at numerous festivals such as the Vans Warped Tour, Lowlands, Rebellion, Pukkelpop, Ruhrpott Rodeo and the Spirit Festival.
Jaya The Cat´s new album THE NEW INTERNATIONAL SOUND OF HEDONISM continues where their previous album MORE LATE NIGHT TRANSMISSIONS left off – giving old and new fans alike a new chapter to listen to, dance to and to fall in love with.
JAYA THE CAT is:
Geoff Lagadec – Vocals, Guitar
David “The Germ” Germain – Drums
Jordi Newcastle – Guitar, Vocals
Jan Jaap “Jay” Onverwagt – Bass, Vocals
Johan van ‘t Zand – Live Keys
Jaya The Cat have a lot of shows lined up for 2012 in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Bulgaria. Hopefully they will tour the U.S. in the future because I hear they put on a really killer show, so go see them live if you can! Check dates and places at their website jayathecat.com, their Facebook page, or their Reverbnation page.
The New International Sound Of Hedonism is Jaya The Cat‘s fourth full-length studio release and their best album to date! It was recorded at Studio 150, Source Recording Studio, and Geoff Lagadec’s house. It was recorded and engineered by Zlaya Hadzich and Oscar Bor, with additional engineering by Jordi Newcastle, Joeri Saal and Alejandro Londoño. The album was produced and mixed by Zlaya Hadzich and Jaya The Cat, and the song “Thessaloniki” was mixed by Oscar Bor. The New International Sound Of Hedonism was mastered by Zlaya Hadzich.
I’ve been waiting for this album since last year, and it did not disappoint. It features 14 tracks of pure punk/ska/reggae/rock genius! The new album has a lot more songs with more of a mainstream pop sound, with the signature hard-edged Jaya The Cat vibe of course. Some songs have acoustic guitars and one song even has some dancehall style rapping by guest vocalist Jonny “Itch” Fox. A few tracks on The New International Sound Of Hedonism reminded me of the famed group Smash Mouth, and that is a compliment! Of course there are also some harder tracks that really rock! Jaya The Cat have really matured into an even more awesome sounding group with a much more diverse sound, and they are truly a force to be reckoned with in the reggae rock scene!
Every song on The New International Sound Of Hedonism is great so it was really hard to narrow it down to which songs to share, but have a listen to the songs “Rebel Sound“, “Late Night Sonic Insurrection“, “Put A Boombox On My Grave“, “One Way Ticket Home“, “Peace And Love“, and “Two Ships Passing“. Also check out the official video for the song “Here Come The Drums“, then follow one of the links below to pre-order The New International Sound Of Hedonism and support Jaya The Cat!
Pieces is the debut full-length album released on May 31st by Phoenix, Arizona based reggae rock band The VeraGroove. This is a killer album by a great band with a truly original sound that they have described as “Desert Reggae Rock ‘n’ Roll”. The VeraGroove have a jam band feel and combine a rockin’ classic rock sound with groovy reggae and hints of blues, jazz, funk, punk, pop, soul, and indie rock. The band consists of 4 members – Rick Moore on vocals & guitar, Sean Lee on keys, Corey Sims on bass, and Johnny Maurer on drums. Here is their full bio:
In August, 2010 in the heat of Phoenix, Arizona, the Veragroove was created under chaotic circumstances. Lead singer Ricky Moore was living in a halfway house. Bassist Corey Sims was on intense probation. Drummer Johnny Maurer and Keyboardist Sean Lee both had significant substance control issues. All band members at some point were homeless. However, what does not kill you makes you stronger (arguably), and in the short span of a year, a major transformation had taken place.
The musical diamond that was formed under the extreme pressures of government, society, family and/or self, eventually became an escape for all band members, as well as a reliable source of light amidst great darkness. Realizing the potential for a brighter future, members of the band quickly focused their energies on writing the music and performing with precision. A raw, energetic, aggressive reggae rock style began to emerge. Influenced by the classic rock of Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Beatles, as well as the great 90‘s bands such as Nirvana, Sublime, STP, and Incubus, the music coalesced and the Veragroove’s initial sound was found. After winning the SRP Battle of the Bands and headlining the local Marquee Theatre at such an early stage, the band has hit the ground running and has not looked back since.
In the short span of a year, the Veragroove movement has been steadily gaining momentum. Following the December ’10 release of their first EP entitled Travelin’ Man (engineered by Grammy Nominated Craig Schumacher, Wavelab Studios), Veragroove music has had airplay on 3 major Arizona radio stations (X103.9, KWSS 106.7, ASU’s KASC theBlaze), along with countless interviews and features on both local and national publishings, online radio stations, podcasts, etc. The band has been consistently playing shows in California, Las Vegas, and Arizona, with artists such as the Dirty Heads, Seedless, the Green, Fortunate Youth, True Press, Stranger, Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds, Rey Fresco, Authority Zero, the Voodoo Glowskulls, 2-tone Lizard Kings, and many more.
Derived from “Truth in Music”, the Veragroove is a prism through which multiple truths come through to create one singular light. The movement moves forward through music, and with the release of their new album entitled Pieces, the Veragroovement is on its way… The band has also started some new musical projects including a reggae/hip hop collaboration as well as a “Veracoustic” release, so there’s much to look forward to in the future!
The VeraGroove have an upcoming show this Thursday, July 19th with the famous reggae rock band Pepper. The show is at Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona, and also features Arizona band Kava Kreation. If you’re in the area, definitely go! Stay up to date with upcoming shows and releases on their Facebook page or Reverbnation page.
The VeraGroove enlisted the help of guest musicians Danny Torgerson of Captain Squeegee to play trumpet and Jake Ross to play ukulele on the new album. Pieces was recorded by James Maras at Pyramix Studios in Glendale, Arizona, and produced, mixed & mastered by Chris Vaughn of AVM Recordings in Phoenix, Arizona.
Pieces is an awesome, rocking album with a really cool mix of styles and emotions, and every track is good! First check out the video slideshow for the album opening song “Tongue Tied” then listen to the songs “Too Much To Lose“, “Days With No Sunshine“, “Pass(Her)By“, “All I Know“, “Mind Body Soul“, and “Sidewalks“. Also watch the video directed by Marcus Eden for the acoustic version of the song “Hand In Hand” that was on The VeraGroove‘s debut release Travelin’ Man EP, then click one of the links below to buy the songs or the whole Pieces album and support The VeraGroove!
One Drop based in San Diego, California embraces the spirit of classic Roots Reggae and Dub music with a calculated blend of R&B, Pop and Rock subtleties. Inspired by artists like Steel Pulse, Gregory Isaacs and The Police. One Drop’s music is infectious and well received by a wide range of age and cultural demographics. Critics describe their sound as genuine and captivating, filled with melodic choruses, refreshing vintage guitar/organ tones all cleverly layered over seductive bass lines. The voice of One Drop is soulfully delivered with brutally honest lyrics rooted from true-life experiences of love, growing up in a dysfunctional home and social & political taboos.
On June 26th, 2012, One Drop released their highly anticipated sophomore album titled “Black Book Diaries” featuring performances from shared cast members and roots reggae veterans “The Devastators” and guest performances from a former member of The English Beat and a cover of Men at Work’s 80’s hit “Down Under”. The album debut at #2 on iTunes Reggae Charts and landed in The Billboards top 10 in reggae albums. With great song writing and musical arrangements executed with retro equipment and out-board effects from 1970’s (Fender Rhodes, Hammond C3, Studio Upright Piano, Clavinet D6, Tape Delays, Analog Spring Reverb) and a blend of organic and innovative digital production tools, One Drop exceeded fans high expectations. It is clear that a tremendous amount of attention and detail went into this album, which features 16 new songs.
The inception of One Drop (a name describing a traditional reggae drum beat popularized by Carlton Barrett of The Wailers) began over a decade ago when introductions were made in a San Diego college music class. The band began to gig aggressively in 2006 and fans got their first taste of recordings in 2007 with the release of their self-titled EP. By 2008 they had developed a huge regional following and in May that same year released their acclaimed debut CD “Mission Blvd” which yielded hit songs “Little Black Dress”, “She’s Gone” and “No Good Reason”. Nominated by San Diego Music Awards for “Best Local Recording”, this pivotal CD has launched One Drop onto an international stage with impressive worldwide sales and downloads. To this day “Mission Blvd” continues to rank high on iTunes reggae charts in the U.S., Canada, Greece, Mexico, Norway, Spain, and Switzerland.
With the reputation as a “must see act”, the band packs venues and performs live shows with high energy, playfully engaging the audience into dance and sing-alongs. One Drop has toured heavily in the U.S. and Internationally (Ecuador, Mexico and Guam) at times sharing the stage with artists such as, Steel Pulse, Ben Harper, The English Beat, G Love, The Dirty Heads, Slightly Stoopid, Soja, Rebelution, Iration, Tribal Seeds and more while receiving support and corporate interest from companies like ERGO and Reef apparel.
One Drop recorded Black Book Diaries in two different studios – Doubletime Studio in El Cajon, California, engineered by Jeff Forrest, and Peaks and Valleys Studio in San Diego, California, engineered by Alex Somerville. The album was produced by One Drop lead singer & guitarist James Alger, and Jeff Forrest & Alex Somerville. Black Book Diaries was mixed and mastered by Jeff Forrest.
Black Book Diaries debuted at #2 on the iTunes Reggae Chart and also reached #10 on the Billboard Reggae Chart. Well-deserved One Drop! Here is what James Alger had to say about their achievements:
“Words cannot describe the joy we are experiencing right now. We are so grateful our passion and hard work is being recognized. Thank you to everyone that has bought the album” – James Alger from One Drop
This is definitely the best One Drop album to date! Black Book Diaries is filled with sweet reggae melodies and some funky R&B hooks that really grab you, with thought provoking lyrics about love & loss, politics & religion, and war & activism. As the chorus says in one of my favorite songs called “Forward” with lyrics about the current state of the world, “we’ve got to move forward!”
Listen to the songs “If You Only Knew“, “Forward (Dub Mix)“, “Devil On The Pulpit“, “Hector Pieterson“, “Daniel In The Lion’s Den“, and “Favorite Lover“. Then click one of the links below to buy Black Book Diaries and support One Drop!
The Heights Of Things is the debut album by the awesome band called Wooster and was released in 2009. Wooster is a great 5-piece band that mixes blues, rock, soul, funk, and reggae into a really groovy sound that is filled with passion. Wooster is based out of Santa Cruz, California, and the members are Brian Gallagher on vocals & rhythm guitar, Caroline Kuspa on lead vocals, Zack Donoghue on lead guitar, Bobby Hanson on bass, and Nate Fredrick on drums. Here is a bio from their website:
In 2006 solo guitarist/songwriter Brian Gallagher walked into the studio with a notebook full of songs and the dream of creating his first record. He walked out 3 years later with a new band and their debut album THE HEIGHTS OF THINGS.
With a diverse collage of blues, soul, rock, funk, and reggae, Wooster’s sound is, above all else, a passionate display of love for the groove.
This love resonates throughout THE HEIGHTS OF THINGS, from the soul drenched “New York”, to reggae influenced “Froghouse” and funk laden “Love is All I Need” featuring Jerry Martin from Sly and the Family Stone on sax. Chant inducing, crowd favorite “Ooh Girl” recounts the familiar scene of trying to find that special someone at the end of the night.
While Gallagher’s vocal delivery is impassioned and raw, the young and beautiful Caroline possesses a remarkable gift for melody that, when combined with the richness of her tone, creates only the most eloquent of harmonies.
Hailing from his roots in local hip hop and rock group, Epicure, lead guitarist Zack Donoghue picks his riffs and spanks his skanks with all the force of a hundred watt Marshall stack. A professional instructor by day, guitar and bassist Bobby Hanson’s technical prowess and inventiveness on his instruments are a matter of interplanetary exploration. He drinks the same milk as Bootsy Collins, and take’s his responsibility as ‘keeper of the funk’ as a professional and lifelong obligation. The son of a music teacher, drummer Nate Fredrick started his professional music career before he started shaving, and continues to impress as a musical and mechanical MaGgyver. Broken down van? Busted Amp? In search of a new song part? Find him a spork, a snap bracelet, and a pair of drumsticks and you’re right back on the road.
Described as “One of Santa Cruz’ liveliest local acts”, Wooster prides themselves on creating the best live show possible. Each time the band plays is a celebration and the crowd is there to party.
Wooster currently has a bunch of shows lined up for summer in California and Washington. If you’re in the area, go see them! Dates and places can be found on their website woosterband.com or their Facebook page.
The Heights Of Things was recorded at Gadgetbox Studios in Santa Cruz, which is also where Wooster is recording their second album with producer Andy Zenczak and engineer Patrick Brede. I’m really looking forward to the next album, so stay tuned for that!
The Heights Of Things is truly a great album with a ton of passion and a great mix of emotions and musical styles.
